Why this happens

A jam happens when a bone, pit or wad of fibers locks up the turntable. You hear a hum because the motor wants to spin and cannot. The red button on the bottom pops because the motor got too hot trying. Drips come from the top where it meets the sink, the side where the pipes connect, or the bottom of the housing. Bottom drips mean the internal seals are gone. A smell usually means food packed under the rubber baffle, or a slow trap past the unit.

What our crew checks

  1. Spin check

An Allen wrench in the bottom tells us if it can turn.

  2. Power path

Reset button, wall switch and outlet each tested.

  3. Drip location

Sink flange, side fittings or housing.

  4. Trap

Cleared so a plugged pipe does not get blamed on the unit.

  5. Dishwasher line

Inspected for dirty water flowing back.

Ways we can fix it

Option 1

Free it up

Stuck plate or popped reset, but the motor itself is fine.

Option 2

Tighten and reseal

Drips at the sink flange or side fittings.

Option 3

Swap it

Housing leak, heavy rust or a motor that will not run.

While you wait for us

Quick tip from the crewShut it off at the wall switch and never reach inside. Give the red button on the bottom one firm push. If it hums again, stop and call us. Forcing a jammed motor is how it burns out.

Out here on the west side

Garbage Disposal Repair near Alamo Ranch and Westover Hills

When we open up a dead disposal on the far west side, it is usually full of grease, rice and fibrous scraps, and often it is the small builder model that came with the house. On larger properties toward Castroville that drain to septic, a disposal that struggles can be a hint the tank needs attention. We tell you what we see and you make the call.

Garbage Disposal Repair FAQ

It hums but nothing happens. What should I do?

It is locked up. Switch it off and keep it off until we free it.

Water is coming out the bottom. Can that be repaired?

Usually not. The internal seals are done, and a new unit is the smarter spend.

What should I keep out of the disposal?

Grease, bones, pits, celery, big batches of peels and heaps of coffee grounds.
